Posted by Next Big Tomorrow on Sunday, November 16, 2020 09:21:22 The city of Sandown is set to open its inaugural track next year.

The Sandown Racing & Leisure Centre, near Newborough, is due to open on December 1.

It will be the first race track in Newborough and is the first to be built in the city since the closure of Sandford racetrack in 2020.

The council said the project would provide jobs and improve the quality of life for Sandown residents.

Mayor Andrew McEwen said the facility would be a major asset to the community.

“It’s going to be a very strong, stable, safe place to live,” he said.

“There’s going be some really good things going on around the track, and people will be able to go about their business in Sandown and get a good night’s sleep.”

Mr McEwens government announced a $30 million stimulus package in November that included $1.5 million to fund the project.
